Salt Chlorine Generators
What are they and how can they upgrade your pool water quality and experience?
What you need to know
Saltwater Chlorine Generators are the safe and simple alternative to traditional chlorine, bromine and algaecide maintained pools. With a relatively easy-to-install system, saltwater pools account for upwards of 75% of all pools in the country. The electrolytic chlorine generator uses salt cells to generate the natural chlorine needed to keep your pool sparkling while providing added benefits such as softer water quality, less regular maintenance, and a safer, chemical-free environment for you and your family!
The Pros
-
No more red itchy eyes or dry skin! Saltwater is more gentle on your eyes and skin, leaving you feeling refreshed and rejuvenated!
-
Save time and cut down on your daily chemical checks. The chlorine generator adds chlorine into the water on an as-needed basis, automatically!
-
Safe and worry-free chlorination! Eliminate the need to store copious amounts of potentially harmful chemicals.
-
Experience a more luxurious swim with silky smooth water! Traditionally added chemicals such as chlorine, bromine, algaecide and more create a hard water environment.
The Cons
-
Start-up costs. As with any new system, there are costs associated with the installation and maintenance. However, with the salt cell requiring replacing only every few years, and the very low cost of salt, there is a lot of potential for long-term savings.
-
May require expert repairs. Due to the electrolytic chlorine generator being a complex piece of machinery, a technician would be needed for troubleshooting. But don't worry, we've got you covered!
-
Requires salt cell cleaning. Once or twice per year, the salt cell component will need to be removed and cleaned. This is a quick and easy process!
Pro Care Tips
-
Clean your slat cell regularly! Make sure to check the cell every few months and clean out the mineral deposits, as needed. Many newer salt chlorine generator systems offer a self cleaning option.
-
Remove the salt cell for the winter. Unless you can keep your water temperature at a minimum of 60 degree year round, it is best to remove and store the cell as part of the winterizing process.
-
Maintain an ideal salt level. The goldilocks zone for pool salt levels is 2700-3400 ppm (parts per million). Adding salt as needed, once or twice per season, will keep your generator running smoothly!
This just in: National Chlorine Shortage Continues
It's no secret that the ongoing global pandemic has had devastating effects on thousands, if not millions, of products nationwide. A chlorine shortage is just one of the many hardships that have come as a result. With people spending more time at home and in their personal pools, the forces of supply and demand have caused the pricing of pool supplies, and chlorine tablets, in particular, to skyrocket over the last 2 years. More recently, in January 2022, an enormous fire broke out at a pool chemical plant in New Jersey. An estimated 100,000 pounds of chlorine tablets were incinerated. As of today, pool supply manufacturers are limited in their distribution of chlorine tablets. Combined with the well-known supply chain issues, the result is an even higher increase in prices and a limited supply of chlorine tablets for your pool. You can read more here.
